As accidents go, a gaping hole opening up underneath your car and swallowing it is likely to spoil your weekend.
A burst water main caused the saloon car to pitch into a deep hole in the middle of a Washington D.C. shopping district yesterday.
Water gushing out of the pipe caused surrounding earth to become eroded before the surface of the road gave way and the car plunged into the gap.

It is the latest in a string of ruptures in D.C. after five have burst in less than a week.
The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission has sent inspectors to shut down the water and determine whether the main belongs to them, according to a spokesman.
The car, which suffered damage to its driver side, was lifted out of the hole using a crane.
