10 weird traffic laws of USA

Weird Traffic Laws

10 of the weirdest, wackiest traffic laws in AmericaBy Cindy Perman
You know the basic traffic laws — stop at a red light, obey the speed limit, don’t drink and drive.

But this is America, land of the free and home of the make-it-up-as-you-go-along, so in addition to the standard traffic laws, there are some weird and wacky ones out there.

Some of them are specific to activities common in that town or state, and some of them make you wonder why someone had to tell you it’s illegal to do that.

10. Screeeeeeeeeeeech!

In Kansas, it is illegal to screech your tires. That's a state law, but there are also local ordinances to back it up.

In Derby, Kansas, for example, it's part of a standard traffic ordinance that any act which causes or creates "unnecessary rapid acceleration, unnecessary tire squeal, skid, smoke or slide upon acceleration or stopping including the casting of tread, gravel, dirt or other road surface materials from the tires" is illegal. Also any acts that "simulate a temporary race."

The penalty is a fine up to $500 and/or imprisonment up to 30 days.

9. Eureka! Wake Up.

In Eureka, California, it is unlawful and an infraction to sleep in any public space. That might make you think park bench, but they go so far as to add that you are not to sleep on any sidewalk, alley or STREET. That’s right, they have to tell you not to sleep in the street.

The offense, should you live to be penalized for it, is classified as a misdemeanor and punishable by a fine up to $1,000 and/or up to six months in jail.

8. Kentucky Doggie

In Fort Thomas, Kentucky, it is illegal for your pet to “molest” a vehicle. Yes, that is the actual, unfortunate legal term used in the city ordinance for “animal-related nuisance.”

The idea of this section is that it is illegal for a pet to cause “annoyance, discomfort or injury to the health and welfare of persons in the community.” The ordinance states that that includes “molesting pedestrians or passing vehicles.”

It is unclear if they were just being thorough or if doggie molestation of cars is common here. In any case, the penalty is that animal-control officers have the right to impound any animal and issue a citation to the owner. Of course, if your dog has a habit of molesting vehicles, you probably already knew you had problems!

The penalty is a fine of up to $500.

Rough! Rough!

7. Dunkin', No Parkin'

Yes, doughnut cravings can be powerful but if you’re in South Berwick, Maine, they can also be expensive. If you park in front of the Dunkin Donuts, you will be ticketed. Specifically, the Dunkin Donuts on Main Street “to a point of 25 feet south.”

No, it’s not so police officers can always be first in line. It’s actually part of a longer list of no-parking zones to “avoid conflict with other traffic.” In this particular case, there’s a school right next door and the road isn’t big enough for parking — parking there would block traffic. Of the seven locations listed in this section of the town ordinance, it’s worth noting that this is the only one that specifically names a business — “No parking in front of the Dunkin Donuts.” They were probably so sick of hearing the excuse “Oh, I’ll just be in and out in five minutes,” that they decided to spell it out — no, seriously, no parking on Main Street IN FRONT OF THE DUNKIN DONUTS.

The penalty is a fine of up to $175 and/or jail time of up to 30 days.

Hope you enjoyed that doughnut!

6. Watch Your Mouth.

If you’re not going to listen to your mother and keep your language clean, you’re going to have to answer to the law in Rockville, Maryland. Here, it’s illegal to swear within earshot of other people, whether you’re on a street, sidewalk or highway. That means even if you’re in your car, you’re going to have to use your talking-in-front-of-the-kids voice.

The penalty is a fine up to $100 and/or jail time up to 90 days.

Dang, that’s tough!

5. Keep It Clean

This time we’re not talking about your language — we’re talking about your car. In Minnetonka, Minnesota, it is considered a public nuisance, and therefore illegal for “a truck or other vehicle whose wheels or tires deposit mud, dirt, sticky substances, litter or other material on any street or highway.”

All violations of the Minnetonka code are subject to fines up to $2,000 but a spokesperson for the city said the city “attempts several other measures to mitigate the situation before pursuing misdemeanor charges.”

4. Keep It On

This is also something you shouldn’t have to tell people outside of a nude beach but in Sag Harbor, New York, it is illegal to take your clothes off in your car.

Sag Harbor, out in the tony Hamptons section of Long Island, is a popular spot for beachgoers. So, this section of the code is part of the parks and recreation law — that you have to be wearing a bathing suit in public and you can’t disrobe on the street or in your car or in any public place.

The penalty is a fine of up to $100 and/or jail time up to three months.

3. Just Roll With It

Roller skating may seem like a harmless hobby but if you do it in the street in Canton, Ohio (other than crossing the street, of course) — that’s illegal.

That section of the Canton code also applies to “any coaster, toy vehicle, skateboard or similar device.”

The penalty is a fine up to $1,000 and up to six months in jail.

How much allowance would you have to save up to pay off a $1,000 fine?!

2. Time's Up!

In Oregon, no dilly-dallying with your car door: It’s illegal to leave a vehicle door open on the side of traffic, pedestrians or bicycles “for a period of time longer than necessary to load or unload passengers.”

The penalty is a fine of $90 and possible jail time.

Ready … set … time’s up!

1. Rats

In Hilton Head, South Carolina, it is illegal to store trash in your car.

Specifically, that section of the code states that it it’s unlawful “to place, leave, dump or permit to accumulate any garbage, rubbish or trash in any building, vehicle and their surrounding areas in the town so that the same shall or may afford food or harborage for rats.”

A violation is consider a public nuisance and is subject to a fine of up to $500 and/or jail time of up to 30 days.

Rats!

Diver finds 17th century gold chain worth $250,000...

Deep sea treasure: 17th century gold chain worth $250,000 plucked from ocean bed near Atocha wreck

A deep sea diver has struck gold after unearthing a 17th century chain worth $250,000 from the ocean floor.
Bill Burt, a diver for Mel Fisher's Treasures, spotted the 40-inch gold chain while looking for the wrecked Nuestra Senora de Atocha, which sank off the Florida Keys in a 1622 hurricane.
Shipwreck experts have tentatively valued the piece at around $250,000.

The chain has 55 links, an enamelled gold cross and a two-sided engraved religious medallion featuring the Virgin Mary and a chalice.
On the edges of the cross there is engraved wording thought to be in Latin.
Andy Matroci, captain of Mel Fisher's Treasures salvage vessel, JB Magruder, said the crew had been diving at the North end of the Atocha trail.

THE ATOCHA - A HISTORY

The Nuestra Señora de Atocha - or Our Lady of Atocha - was built for the Crown in Havana in 1620.
She was 550 tons with an overall length of 112 feet, had a beam of 34 feet and a draft of 14 feet.
Heavily armed, she was designed to protect other ships within a fleet from attack.
On her doomed voyage of 1622, the Atocha was loaded with an extraordinary cargo.
She carried 24 tons of silver bullion in 1038 ingots, 180,00 pesos of silver coins, 582 copper ingots, 125 gold bars and discs, 350 chests of indigo, 525 bales of tobacco, 20 bronze cannon and 1,200 pounds of worked silverware.
Smuggled items to avoid taxation and unregistered and personal jewellery would also have been onboard.
On September 6 the Atocha was cast onto the coral reefs near the Dry Tortugas - around 35 miles West of Key West - by a severe hurricane.
With her hull badly damaged she quickly sunk with 265 people on board.
Only five - three sailors and two slaves - survived by clinging on to the stump of her mast.
Rescuers tried to get onto the ship but found her hatches tightly battened.
At 55 foot the water depth was too great for them to work on opening her.
They marked the site and moved on to rescue people and treasure from other ships also lost in the storm.
A month later a second hurricane blew through, further destroying the wreck.
For the next 60 years Spanish salvages searched n vain for the galleon, but they never found a trace.
On their last trip to the wreck they uncovered 22 silver coins and a cannon ball just east of the site.
They had been hoping to find more coins in the area, Mr Matroci said, but instead found the chain.
'In the nine years I have been running this boat this is the most unique artefact we have brought up,' Mr Matroci said.
The piece is believed to be from the Atocha's infamous treasure trove.
The company has uncovered half a billion dollars in historic artefacts, gold, silver and emeralds since they began diving the wreck in 1969.
In 1985 - after 15 years of searching - the Fisher crew discovered Atocha's 'mother lode', worth more than $450million.
They unearthed thousands of artefacts, silver coins, gold coins - many in near mint condition, exquisite jewellery sets with precious stones, gold chains, disks, a variety of armaments and even seeds, which later sprouted.
They then faced a legal wrangle with the U.S. Government claimed title to the wreck. Florida state officials seized many of the items the Fisher crew had retrieved.
But after eight years of litigation, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Fisher's favour.
The contents of the ships sterncastle - a wooden, fort-shaped area at the back of ship, have never been recovered.
This is where the wealthy passengers, including nobility and clergy, would have stayed.
Fisher's estimates the treasure in the sterncastle section is worth in the region of half a billion dollars.
The latest find was likely owned by a member of the clergy indicating the company's search for the missing treasure trove could be getting nearer.

Cezanne painting bought for under £100 worth £40million.

Junk shop painting could be worth £40m

Auctioneer Tim Conrad examines the painting /NTI Media/Rex
A painting bought from a junk shop because the buyer liked the frame could be a £40million masterpiece.
Experts believe the picture of a small house by a river might be the earliest known work of French artist Paul Cezanne.
The buyer, a man from Northampton who does not want to be named, said: "I'm not trying to think about what to do with the money yet - I won't tempt fate."
He bought the 4ft x 3ft painting, which appears to be signed and dated 1854, six years ago and kept it in an attic.
"I bought the painting from a second hand shop in Northampton which sells all sorts of little bits and pieces of old tat," he said.
"I can't remember how much I paid, but it was under £100. I bought it for the frame and it's been gathering dust ever since."
Only later, flicking through an art history book, did he spot similarities between the 4ft by 3ft picture of a small house with an orange roof surrounded by trees in his attic and the work of Cezanne.
His suspicions were backed by Tim Conrad from Wilfords auction house, in Wellingborough, Northants.
Mr Conrad said: "The brushstrokes certainly look like Cezanne and it was usual for him to use a variety of signature styles.
"If it is, the impact would be enormous and it would fetch £40million easily."

Fat Ho cafe comes under attack from gospel competition...

Fat Ho Burgers owner defends controversial name

Fat Ho Burgers might seem to some like an unusual name for a restaurant, but its owner has defended her choice after coming under fire from local businesses.

Fat Ho Burgers has had a mixed reception in TexasFat Ho Burgers has had a mixed reception in Texas
Lakita Evans is the mastermind behind the burger joint and its unconventional name, and said she had no intention of causing offence.
'It's not calling people a ho. It's just like they say, "Oooh that ho is big," or, "That ho is tight!"' she told Fox News.
Other local business owners don't see it that way and the 23-year-old entrepreneur has come under criticism from the nearby Gospel Cafe, an eatery and bookshop run by religious volunteers.
Pastor Marsha Martie said: 'Would've been nice to think a little more sensitively.'
However, Ms Evans has defended the Fat Ho Cafe, which counts Sloppy Ho Brisket and Supa Dupa Fly Ho with Chz among its specials.
'Look what's going on in Japan. It's like clear this world is not gonna get any better. Why cry and be depressed? The economy is bad. Somebody gotta keep a sense of humour around here,' she said.
For a lesson in how to really cause controversy then people might want to follow the lead of The Heart Attack Grill.
The burger restaurant, which serves the Quadruple Bypass Burger and Flatline Fries, hit the headlines after saying anyone weighing over 25 stone could eat for free.

A Russian billionaire has paid a staggering $70 million for a mega-mansion in California’s Silicon Valley, it was revealed today.
The housing crisis may be rumbling on elsewhere in the US, but investor Yuri Milner bought the 25,000-square foot, 11-acre estate…as a second home!
It was the biggest price tag ever paid in Santa Clara County, an area known for its high-priced luxury properties.
The hilltop home, which includes its own carwash, was built in 2009 and has five bedrooms, nine baths and a tennis court.
Mr Milner’s primary residence is in Moscow, where he lives with his wife and two daughters. But he is a frequent visitor to the high-tech enclave in northern California.
The 47-year-old Internet tycoon – a former particle physics graduate student - appears on the cover of the most recent issue of Forbes magazine and has invested heavily in Facebook, Zynga and Groupon through his investment firm DST Global.
His company is said to control about 10%, or $5 billion worth, of Facebook’s shares.
He also built up the Russian online company Mail.ru, which last year listed on the London stock exchange.
The Russian billionaire reportedly paid $70million for this 25,500 square foot house in Los Altos Hills - and it won't even he his main residence

The home was bought from another tycoon, Fred Chan, founder of ESS Technology, who has reportedly decided to stay living in Hawaii after building the Silicon Valley mansion.
Mr Milner reportedly made the transaction through a limited liability company called La Paloma Property.
The sale was seen as a sign that the market in high-end properties on the West Coast is heating up.
‘This valley attracts money and lifestyle. We’re definitely seeing a little surge,’ Michael Sibilia, president of the Santa Clara County Association of Realtors told the San Jose Mercury News.
