Deep fried Creme Eggs on the menu for easter...

How do you eat yours? Chip shop owner serves up Creme Eggs... deep fried

A Cadbury's creme egg is part of the run-up to Easter for many of us. But not, perhaps the way chip shop owner Martyn Bilby sells them. For Mr Bilby has come up with the idea of putting the eggs in his deep fat fryer.
And despite the 350 calories - and possibly the unappetising appearance of the fried treat - customers of all ages have been buying them, he said yesterday.
Calorific: The deep fried Creme Eggs have been created strictly as an Easter treat

The self-styled Heston Blumenthal of deep-fat frying came up with the idea after selling deep-fried mince pies at Christmas.

‘I will try anything,’ he said yesterday. ‘Quite a few people have tried them  already.
‘The idea is to eat it quickly while the batter is still hot, and before the  chocolate inside begins to melt.
‘If you let them go cold it can get a bit soggy in the middle. I'm not saying  they are healthy, but it is something for a treat.
‘There are a lot of foods where if you eat too much of them it is bad for you,  but I see these as just a treat for Easter.’

Mr Bilby, from Donaster, South Yorkshire, plans to donate all the proceeds from  his latest invention to charity.
‘People turn their noses up at first,’ he said. ‘But once they try them they  eat their words and agree that they are really tasty.
‘It is effectively putting something like a doughnut shell around the egg.’
But perhaps unsurprisingly, some local people are not persuaded by the thought  of a deep-fat fried creme egg – even if the proceeds are going to charity.
David Goodwin, 64, a tax inspector said: ‘I wouldn't have one given to me - and  certainly wouldn't pay for one.
‘It doesn't appeal at all. I'm not into unusual food, though I did once try  tripe. I didn't like that either.’
    There are, however, always students.
One of them, Karl Smallwood, 20, said: ‘I once tried a deep fried Mars bar and  some deep fried pizza. And I have to say it was strangely satisfying.’
Another, Alex Bennell, 20, said: ‘It doesn't sound ideal when you have a  pending obesity pandemic but, hey, why not?’
Claire Lawson, 20, also a student, said: ‘I try to eat healthily but can’t always afford it.
‘So if someone offered me a free deep fried creme egg I'd go for it. I don't know  whether I could eat two though.’
While filled eggs were first manufactured by the Cadbury Brothers in 1923, the Creme Egg in its current form was introduced in 1971.

The egg consists of a thick milk chocolate shell housing a white and yellow  fondant filling made from egg, thick white cream, sugars and other additives.
Creme Eggs are the best-selling confectionery item between New Year's Day and  Easter in the UK with annual sales in excess of 200 million items and a brand value of approximately £45 million.
The eggs are manufactured at the Bournville factory in Birmingham at the rate of 1.5 million per day.

    10 best royal wedding apps...

    10 best royal wedding apps

Royal wedding fans can now follow the build-up via their smartphone or tablet computer. Here’s our guide to 10 of the best apps to download prior to the big day.

With every man and his corgi talking about the rapidly approaching royal wedding, there are a vast number of regal apps making their way onto the market to keep you up to date with all the news.
    1. The Royal Wedding by Hello!
    (iPhone and iPad – Free)
Hello!’s wedding app is one of the best. A basic picture-driven app that works especially well on the iPad, it stands out from the rest of the Royal Wedding apps.
    2. ITN Royal Wedding Video App
    (iPhone and Android – Free)
The app, developed to support ITN’s ‘Royal Wedding Channel’ on YouTube, delivers up -to-date news and video content on all things royal in the run up to the big day.
An absurd app that allows you to 'dress' the Queen in a polka-dot bathing suit and place her alongside her grandsons, who may just happen be sporting an eccentric handle-bar moustache if that’s what you are in to. The app borders on being tasteless and disrespectful, but will provide the more immature user with a giggle or two.
Will you be crowned the Weakest Link? If so, you need to be sharp on your general knowledge and prepared for the occasional odd royal wedding question, which has been thrown in for good measure. A little slow at times but a satisfying experience.
The app features a combination of arty regal-themed tea towels alongside appropriately themed audio clips, such as the obvious “Wedding March.” However, there is no doubt that the majority of iPhone owners would sooner fork out 59p on Angry Birds.
    6. Royal Invite
    (iPhone – free)
Pretend you’ve been personally invited to the wedding by Her Majesty the Queen with an onscreen invitation to show your friends. Having seen one of the official invites, it’s safe to say this app hasn’t quite hit the nail on the head with its digital take on the invitation.
    7. Royal Wedding Pairs
    (iPhone – free)
Turn over tile-after-tile as you attempt to find a pair. A decent app to pass the time on a two minute tube journey between St James’ Park and Victoria but anything longer and it’ll soon become tedious.
    8. A Royal Wedding Celebration: William and Kate
    (iPhone and iPad - £0.59)
An app packed full of content, from details of how the royal romance blossomed to which celebs made it onto the guest list. It also features an impressive collection of Press Association images which is will update with further images after the big day.
    9. Royal Wedding Essential Guide
    (iPhone and iPad - £0.59)
This guide has been well put together and features a wide range of content, including an interactive map showing locations connected to the wedding. The 'Royal Personality Test' is a must-do for those who secretly want to be in the monarchy.
    10. Coming soon: The first official “Royal App” by the Royal Collection, on April 18
    (iPhone and Android - £1.79)
If you are interested in the royal weddings that preceded William and Kate’s, then this is the app for you. It covers seven weddings from Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1840, to The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall in 2005. The Royal Weddings App reveals the tradition, splendour and romance of previous marriages through a rustic-themed photo gallery and some interesting articles.

    FBI releases UFO files...

'Exploding UFOs and alien landings' in secret FBI files

Secret FBI files have been released detailing how US officials saw a UFO explode over Utah – and aliens land near Roswell in New Mexico.

Images of aliens autopsied by the US military at Roswell in 1947 were a hoax

Images of aliens autopsied by the US military at Roswell in 1947 were a hoax
A declassified document from 1949 tells how three men, on patrols miles apart, each reported seeing a UFO break up over mountains north of Salt Lake City.
The 1950 memo that recounts the discovery of flying saucers and aliens in New Mexico
The 1950 memo that recounts the discovery of flying saucers and aliens in New Mexico
Their extraordinary accounts were sent to Edgar Hoover, the director of the FBI, in a memo titled "Flying Discs".
The file said that a policeman, a highway patrolman and an army guard all "saw a silver coloured object high up approaching the mountains at Sardine Canyon" that "appeared to explode in a rash of fire."
"Several residents [reported] seeing what appeared to be two aerial explosions, followed by falling object," it said.
The file is one of thousands of previously unreleased files that the FBI has made public in a new online resource called The Vault.
Among them is a 1950 statement from special agent Guy Hottel, which seems to provide evidence for the theory that aliens landed at Roswell, New Mexico.
In the memo, Agent Hottel said that "three so-called flying saucers had been recovered in New Mexico".
He wrote that the flying saucers were "described as being circular in shape with raised centers, approximately 50 feet in diameter."
In a statement that is reminiscent of the hit 1990s TV programme The X-Files, he went on to describe the alien life forms inside the UFOs.
"Each one was occupied by three bodies of human shape but only 3 feet tall," he wrote.
The bodies were "dressed in a metallic cloth of a very fine texture. Each body was bandaged in a manner similar to the blackout suits used by speed flyers and test pilots."
Agent Hottel suggested that the UFOs had crashed in New Mexico because high-powered government radar had interfered with their operating systems.
The release of the files are likely to intensify the claims of conspiracy theorists who believe the US government covered up alien landings.
Roswell became infamous after reports that a flying saucer had crashed in the desert nearby in 1947.
The bodies of aliens were said to have been recovered by the military.

Wear a bra to bed to perk up your cleavage....

As Mariella Frostrup reveals an unlikely beauty tip...will sleeping in a bra perk up your cleavage?

    By KAREN KAY
Last updated at 9:07 AM on 11th April 2011
What woman in her right mind wouldn’t want to look (and sound) like TV presenter Mariella Frostrup?
At 48, she has womanly curves and an assured sex appeal that most of us would die for — even at half her age.
So when she claimed in a magazine interview that one of the secrets to her enviable figure is wearing a bra in bed, you can bet that hordes of women across the nation decided that they, too, would keep their breasts firmly ensconced after lights out.
Better than a boob job: Some say sleeping in a bra can prevent breasts sagging with age
Better than a boob job: Some say sleeping in a bra can prevent breasts sagging with age
‘The best piece of advice I got was from Paula Yates,’ confided the mother-of-two. ‘I was moaning about my breasts and she said: “Never, ever have a breast job. Just wear a bra in bed.” That’s what I do. I haven’t taken it off for 15 years.’
Her decision to wear a bra 24 hours a day triggered immense debate among experts and ordinary women alike.
Whether Mariella Frostrup’s husband Jason McCue finds her attachment to her bra appealing is a matter for them alone. However, for many men, the prospect of their lover caging in their breasts all night might not be a winner.
Experts are equally divided about the assertion that night-and-day bra-wearing can prevent the natural ageing process.

Grete Braughton-Smith, a clinical nurse specialist at the charity Breast Cancer Care, is circumspect as to whether there are any merits to the anti-aging theory.
‘I think it’s a personal choice and is often more about comfort than anything else,’ she says.
‘Some women — especially those who are larger-busted — find they enjoy the support bra-wearing gives them, be that during the day or at night. For example, during or after pregnancy, when women find they go up a size or two, we would encourage them to wear a bra in bed if they feel more secure.
Beauty tip: Mariella Frostrup wears a bra in bed

‘Some styles would not be ideal for night-time wear, but it is important to note that bra-wearing at any time of the day doesn’t the increase risk of breast cancer.’
Common sense suggests a complex, underwired bra with push-up padding might not be the ideal style to slumber in, and that a properly fitting ‘soft’ bra without rigid boning or integrated padding would be more comfortable.
Michelle Mone, creator of the best-selling Ultimo bra collection, is ahead of the curve when it comes to attractive, comfy bras that can be worn day and night.
In October, she’ll be launching a lightweight, non-restrictive bra that’s designed for wearing 24 hours a day.
‘It’ll be made from super- soft materials that allow the skin to breathe and its construction will be supportive but, most importantly, non-restrictive,’ she says.
While most lingerie and clinical experts are cautious about the benefits of wearing a bra in bed, Jan Janzen, a Canadian writer, is out- spoken on the subject.
The author of The Booby Trap and Breast Health Exposed! 21 Secrets Most Doctors Will Never Tell You About Your Breasts, challenges the idea that bras are beneficial at all.
‘I have liberated my breasts and rarely wear a bra,’ she says. ‘I have never had such healthy, happy breasts since they have known freedom. The bottom line is that breasts need to jiggle. Going bra-less does not make breasts sag. It actually strengthens the ligaments we have to support our breasts. They’ve just got lazy — similar to what would happen if you put your arm in a sling and never used it.’

      KEEP ABREAST
Women have used bra-like devices to support and enhance their cleavage since 2000BC
Dr Elizabeth Vaughan, based in North Carolina, is a proponent of going bra-free at all times and has been preaching this message to her patients for more than 25 years.
‘Breasts are loaded with lymphatic tissue, which doesn’t have a pump like  the heart. Movement and massage help move toxins along our lymphatic system, and anything that slows down the clearing of these toxins will increase the risk of developing symptoms and/or disease.
‘Bras that restrict movement of the breasts appear to increase congestion. Slowing down clearance of toxins from the breasts will increase the rate women develop breast diseases.’
Whatever the experts say, you might want to bear in mind that Marilyn Monroe is believed to have worn more than just Chanel No 5 in bed — it’s thought she kept her 36D figure trim by keeping her bra on.
Despite certain experts’ misgivings, if it’s good enough for Marilyn and Mariella, it’s surely worth a try.

85-year-old grandfather crosses Atlantic on pipe raft....

      Grandfather fulfills pipe dream

      Journey's end for the An-Tiki /PA
An 85-year-old pensioner has fulfilled a lifetime's ambition by sailing across the Atlantic - on a raft made of pipes.
Anthony Smith completed the 2,800-mile voyage after 66 days at sea sailing between the Canary Islands and the Caribbean, reports The Sun.
The grandfather, a former BBC Tomorrow's World presenter, was joined aboard the An-Tiki by a crew of three he recruited with a newspaper advert.
They made the treacherous trip in the one-of-a-kind vessel, made from 12-metre lengths of water and gas pipes and powered by only a 40ft mast and 400sq ft sail.
Mr Smith said: "Some people say it was mad. But it wasn't mad. What else do you do when you get on in years?"
Along with crew David Hildred, Andrew Bainbridge, and John Russell, he wanted to prove the elderly are capable of embarking on adventures some consider dangerous.
"How many people do you know who have rafted across the Atlantic? The word mutiny was only spoken about two or three times a day," he added.
They also wanted to raise awareness about the environment and raise cash for water charity WaterAid.
An-Tiki, made up of four water supply pipes and 14 cross pipes, seven of which stored the crew's fresh water supply, survived the voyage unscathed but for damage to two rudders.
The adventurers had intended to end their trip in the Bahamas, but strong winds and currents forced them to the Dutch Caribbean island of St Maarten.

That's stretching it a bit: Driver spends £200,000 converting his Ferrari 360 into a limousine

If you thought hiring a limousine to celebrate that special occasion was a little 1990s, here's one motorist who has stretched the concept that little bit further.
This exclusive Ferrari 360 Coupe has been converted into a luxury limousine after six months of reconstruction.

Costing from around £50,000 new, the owner of the vehicle spent £200,000 converting his pride and joy using genuine Ferrari parts.
Extra reinforcing had to be used to sustain the weight of the vehicle and the power of the car's 400 BHP engine.
But the Ferrari, based in London, can't quite match up to its original speed due to the extra weight it is now carrying.
'Fat' Ferrari: The original car would have cost from £50,000 new and was capable of doing 0-60mph in just over four seconds
