Rationing and chores... How Fifties woman was so much healthier than us

Their diets suffered under rationing – and they certainly knew less about the dangers of smoking. But  women were still healthier in the Fifties than they are today, researchers say.
Although they ate more saturated fat and were more likely to smoke, they took far more exercise – largely because household chores were more onerous – which meant their hearts were healthier.
Meanwhile, rationing meant they were forced to include more vegetables in their diet.

Labour saving: 1950s women burned in excess of 1,000 calories a day doing household chores. Right, in contemporary Britain the housework is much less physically challenging
According to the research, by the time modern men and women reach their 50s, they are less healthy than their counterparts half a century ago.
In 1951, the average housewife burned well in excess of 1,000 calories a day, mainly because housework was much more strenuous.
She had to use apparatus such as twin tubs to wash her family’s clothes – harder work than simply pressing a button on the automatic washing machine.
But although she was burning calories fast, the average woman  consumed just 1,818 a day in 1951. Today, women consume an average of 2,178 calories – and get through just 556.

Despite the worrying statistics, more than two-thirds of women believe they are healthier than the postwar generation, found Saga, the older people’s organisation which carried out the research.
Tam Fry, of the National Obesity Forum, said: ‘Sixty years ago your middle-aged housewife was undoubtedly healthier than her counterpart of today – provided she didn’t smoke.
‘Because of the lack of labour-saving housekeeping gadgets, her household chores helped her to burn off nearly twice the number of calories than does her routine to-day.
'If the average woman today is burning off only 556 calories but consuming more than the recommended 2,000 per day, it shouldn’t surprise anyone if she is getting less than healthy.

‘She may indeed be eating less saturated fat but, by just eating more food and exercising less, she will be piling on the pounds.
‘Unfortunately, that may well lead to her acquiring co-morbidities  [additional disorders] caused by excess weight and for which medication will be necessary.
‘The message is clear: eat less and exercise more to live the rest of your life free from the drugs cabinet.’
Katharine Jenner, of Consensus Action on Salt and Health, said: ‘If we could get back to the essence of home cooking and unprocessed food that was the norm in post-war Britain, and continue not to add salt during cooking and at the table, we would see the enormous health-related benefits of reduced stroke and heart disease mortality and morbidity.
‘It’s a great opportunity to try eating less salt.’
Saga also expressed concern the over-50s take less exercise than they did just 20 years ago.
Just 38 per cent of men and 30 per cent of women between 45 and 54 meet daily recommendations for physical activity.

    1. This is one of those articles that, as a housewife/homemaker, makes me realize how lucky and screwed I am. While I make a living sitting at the laptop and spinning tales, I still have to do housework. I do hand wash dishes, but like all other modern homes we have a washer and dryer, a very easy and lightweight vacuum, etc. No wonder I still haven't lost any weight.
