A tail of friendship: Kevin and Kate Rattray – it really is their name – with some of their brood at their home
For most people, having rats in their home means an urgent call to pest control, but not this couple.
‘They make fantastic pets,’ said Mrs Rattray, 31. ‘They are very intelligent and interactive. They are up at the bars to greet us when we come in from work and we let them out to play.
‘They definitely have personalities and they’re great fun to spend time with.’
The GP had two rats while she was at university but her husband, who grew up on a farm, thought of them as vermin. That was until the couple took their first into their home in 2006 and his opinion changed.

Mr Rattray, a lab supervisor, and his wife are members of the Yorkshire Rat Club, which holds regular shows.
